Pressure To Control PD Outbreaks

Norway ? Outbreaks of pancreas disease (PD) outside the PD zone in Norway are putting increasing pressure and the government to control the disease. This month, pancreas disease (PD) was diagnosed outside Norway's PD zone. This has come as a massive shock to the industry and the veterinary authority. PD is one of the most economically damaging diseases present in the industry. 

PD is caused by a virus called salmonid alphavirus and is detected in Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout. The disease is regularly detected within the PD zone, however outbreaks out of the PD zone are treated seriously in an attempt to stop the virus spreading. 

Earlier this month, Leroy Seafood Group announced that traces of PD were found in some fish during a routine check in its subsidiary group - Leroy Hydrotech. Within a couple of days PD was found at a number of other sites, a Leroy site in Nord-M©ªre and a SalMar site in S©ªr-Tr©ªndelag. Following on from this, the Food Safety Authority began testing all farms in the infected areas. It is determined to not let the disease spread North of Hustadvika.
